Why does National Heritage – Museums Action Movement exist?
More people visit museums and galleries than go to football matches. National Heritage is the only independent body representing these millions of visitors.
When National Heritage started it generated a renaissance in the museum and gallery world. In the early 1970s museum displays tended to be hidden in dusty and fly-blown glass cases, inaccessible to children and with antique labels often difficult to decipher. Visitors were seen in some museums as an unwelcome distraction. National Heritage got the message, and the Museum of the Year scheme was born. Its judges soon made clear that no museum or gallery was likely to get an award unless it recognised the importance of displaying and explaining its collections to visitors.
Nowadays we continue to support museums and galleries, criticizing when appropriately. We continue to carry out research, encourage museums and galleries to cater for their visitors and we support the Museum Prize, the largest arts prize in the UK.
We also keep watch on what is happening to our heritage, asking members to alert us to any threats they see in their area.
How your legacy will help
Your contribution will enable us to continue working for visitors and museums and galleries.
We rely entirely on the generosity of our supporters, receiving no financial support from government or lottery sources. This means that every contribution we receive is especially treasured.
